What is Somatics?
 
 

Somatic movement education merges hands-on techniques with a daily practice, enabling a deeper connection to your body. This approach helps you recognize tension, discomfort, or misalignment, which can be eased through gentle and intentional movements.

 

This form of education offers specialized sensory motor training that clarifies the origins of muscle tension and teaches you how to address it. It enhances your self-awareness, enabling you to recognize bodily changes and take charge of your own well-being without depending on external help.

The Somatic Reflexes

Stress manifests in the body through three unique patterns or reflexes. 

 

​1)  Green Light Reflex - Stress that pushes us forward to achieve. Our go, go, go response to life!

2)  Red Light Reflex - Stress that causes us to slow down and move inward. This is also seen with prolonged laptop and cellphone use, the rounding forward stance. 

​3) The Physical Trauma Reflex - Stress that is caused by an accident or injury.

​- The goal of Somatics is to address these patterns. Pain is not always where the problem lies. The focus is on the whole system, the interconnectedness,  rather than just one area. 

Sensory Motor Amnesia 

Stress frequently manifests physically as muscle tightness. When we experience extended periods of stress, this tightness can become a persistent, chronic,  condition that we can't easily release. This is known as Sensory Motor Amnesia (SMA). We lose the ability to sense and move efficiently, as our bodies 'forget' how to respond in a relaxed and coordinated manner Often overlooked because it operates beneath our conscious awareness, it ultimately reveals itself through discomfort or tension in the body.

How to Get Out of Pain

SMA can be addressed by reestablishing the brain's ability to manage our movements. This can be accomplished through pandiculation, a powerful method for alleviating muscle tension. Dogs and cats pandiculate every time they wake up from a nap to prepare them to move, hunt, and play. It is something we naturally do when we enjoy a deep yawn. This helps to reset our muscles and get us ready to move. By relieving tension, we regain our freedom of movement, allowing us greater enjoyment of the activities we love! 

Stretching vs. Pandiculation

When SMA affects a muscle, it loses its connection to conscious brain control. Simply stretching the muscle does not engage the brain in the process. The brain is responsible for muscle movement, and stretching a tense muscle can trigger the "stretch reflex," causing further tightening as a protective mechanism. Instead of traditional stretching, PANDICULATION offers a way to re-establish this connection, without the need to stretch. .

Somatics is simple and effective. By using Somatics daily we improve the awareness of our bodies. The more aware you are of your body, the less likely you are to become injured by pushing yourself too hard through exercise, yard work, etc. But, if you do happen to over do it, you will have the Somatic movements to help you reset your muscles. 15 minutes a day can keep you moving freely so you can enjoy the many activities you love. Age is not the factor, it is how free our muscles are that makes the difference!
